Naoya Matsumoto wrote and drew the Japanese manga series Kaiju No. 8, also known as Monster #8. Shueisha’s manga application and website Shonen Jump+ has been serialized for free from July 2020. Viz Media licensed the series for English publication in North America.

Throughout Japan for many years, hideous creatures known as “kaijuu” (including Godzilla) prowled. Every day, members of the defense corps, a military elite force, put their lives in danger in order to defend people and confront these animals. When a monster is slain, it is left behind for “sweepers,” or workers of the Professional Kaijuu Cleaner.

Kafka Hibino, 32, is frustrated with his street sweeping work. From a young age, he wished to join the Defense Corps and slay Kaijuus in order to begin a new life. After a few fruitless efforts, he gave up on his dreams and settled for the mediocrity of a comfortable wage. When an enthusiastic 18-year-old employee named Leno Ichikawa joins his crew for clean-up, Kafka is reminded of his ambition to enter the military.

Kafka comes into touch with a parasite kaijuu who makes his way through his mouth and turns his body into the humanoid monster after a number of tragic occurrences and contacts with the younger bird. With his new powers, Kafka desires to give his longstanding goal one final attempt.
