Naoya Matsumoto wrote and illustrated the Japanese manga series Kaiju No. 8, also known as Monster #8. Shueisha’s manga application and website Shonen Jump+ has been serialized for free since July 2020. Viz Media licensed the series for English publication in North America.

Throughout Japan for many years, grotesque monsters known as “kaijuu” (including Godzilla) prowled. Every day, members of the defense troop, a military elite unit, put their lives in danger in order to protect civilians and fight these beasts. When a monster is killed, it is left behind for “sweepers,” or employees of the Professional Kaijuu Cleaner.

Kafka Hibino, 32, is dissatisfied with his street sweeping job. From a young age, he wished to join the Defense Corps and kill Kaijuus in order to begin a new life. After a few failed attempts, he gave up on his dreams and settled for the mediocrity of a reasonable salary. When an ambitious 18-year-old employee named Leno Ichikawa joins his team for clean-up, Kafka is reminded of his desire to rejoin the military.

After a series of bad manga events and interactions with the junior bird, Kafka meets a parasite kaijuu that forces its way through his mouth and turns him into a humanoid monster. With his new abilities, Kafka wishes to give his lifelong dream one last shot.
